How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue read more is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor.
